Coffee Beans
What are the best coffee beans for home use?
The best beans depend on your taste. Medium roast beans are balanced and smooth, dark roasts are stronger and richer, while light roasts offer brighter fruity flavours.
Are whole coffee beans better than ground coffee?
Yes. Whole beans stay fresher for longer and keep more aroma. Grinding fresh before brewing usually gives better flavour.
How long do coffee beans stay fresh?
Once opened, coffee beans are usually best within 4 to 6 weeks if stored correctly in an airtight container.
How should coffee beans be stored?
Keep beans in a cool, dry cupboard inside an airtight container. Avoid fridges, freezers, heat and direct sunlight.
What is the difference between Arabica and Robusta?
Arabica beans are smoother and sweeter. Robusta beans are stronger, bolder and higher in caffeine.
What are single-origin coffee beans?
Single-origin coffee comes from one farm or region and often has unique flavour notes.
Brewing Coffee
How much coffee should I use per cup?
A strong starting point is 15 grams of coffee per 250ml of water.
Why does my coffee taste bitter?
This is often caused by over-extraction, stale beans or water that is too hot.
What water is best for coffee?
Filtered water is ideal. It improves flavour and reduces limescale build-up.
What grind size should I use?
Fine for espresso, medium for filter coffee, coarse for cafetière.
Machines & Equipment
What is the best coffee machine for beginners?
Bean-to-cup machines are ideal for beginners because they grind fresh beans automatically.
Is buying a coffee grinder worth it?
Yes. A quality grinder often improves coffee more than upgrading the machine.
How often should I descale my machine?
Usually every 1 to 3 months depending on water hardness and use.
